How to Maintain Blonde Hair: The Ultimate Guide

How to Maintain Blonde Hair: The Ultimate Guide

If you're a brunette in disguise, or a redhead in camouflage, blonde can be one of the hardest hair colours to maintain. In this blog Laura Elliott, Neäl & Wølf’s head stylist has assembled her top tips for keeping your blonde hair looking like you're fresh out of the salon.

1. Use purple shampoo

To keep your hair blonder for longer, purple shampoo should be an essential part of your haircare regime. Infused with purple pigmentation, our BLONDE Purple Shampoo & Conditioner neutralises brassy tones. The lilac colouring counteracts the orange trying to break through. Our colour correcting shampoo’s unique blend of Vitamin B5 and glycerine offers long-lasting colour protection, whilst keeping your hair feeling and looking healthy.

2. Keep hair hydrated

Hair colouring can result in your hair losing a lot of its natural oils and nutrients. So, once you've reached your desired shade of blonde, it is essential that you replenish your hair with nourishing products. We’d recommend our HYDRATE Moisture Collection, which is enriched with essential oils to lock in moisture and keep your hair feeling healthy.

3. Regular salon visits

Even with the best at-home care, a salon refresh is essential to maintaining perfect blonde hair. Regular trims keep split ends at bay, and a toner treatment like our GLAZE Demi Toner can work to revive and refresh your locks. We’ve recently released a range of brand new blonde tones into our salons. Interested? Find your Neäl & Wølf salon today

4. Protect from heat

Frequent styling with heat tools can weaken blonde hair and lead to dullness or breakage. Always use a heat protectant spray before blow-drying, straightening, or curling your hair. Our MIRACLE Rapid Blow-Dry Mist not only speeds up drying time but also provides heat protection, ensuring your blonde remains sleek and glossy. It also includes violet pigment to keep brassy tones at bay.

5. Minimise sun and chlorine exposure

The sun’s UV rays can fade blonde tones, making them appear brassy, while chlorine in swimming pools can turn hair green. To protect your colour, wear a hat when in the sun and rinse your hair with clean water before and after swimming to reduce chlorine absorption. 6. Rinse with cold water

Hot water can cause dryness and fade colour faster. When washing your hair, finish with a cool rinse to help seal the cuticle and lock in moisture and shine. Feeling brave? You could even swap some of your hot showers for lukewarm water altogether.

7. Avoid over washing

Washing your hair too frequently can strip it of natural oils, leading to dryness and colour fading. Try to wash your blonde hair only two to three times a week, using a dry shampoo between washes to keep it fresh. We’d recommend spraying our TEXTURE Dry Shampoo & Finishing Spray section-by-section onto hair for a buildable, flexible hold.

8. Have lemon juice on standby

Bleached hair can be easily influenced by its environment. If you notice your hair is developing a greenish tinge, for example, it's likely that your tap water has higher copper levels. If this happens, use a mildly acidic rinse of lemon juice to help lift the colour out. Once it's been applied, wash it out with shampoo.

9. Brush with care

Blonde hair can be fragile, and brushing wet tresses can lead to unwanted breakages and frizziness. Use a wide-tooth comb or a detangling brush to prevent unnecessary breakage, starting from the ends and working your way up. Never brush it unless it's dry!

10. Sleep on a silk pillowcase

For an extra touch of luxury, swap your cotton pillowcase for silk. Silk reduces friction while you sleep, preventing tangles and breakage—keeping your blonde hair smooth and damage-free. For more tips on how to look after coloured hair, read our blog: How to Maintain Your Coloured Hair
