Best hair products for braids

Level: Intermediate

A Dutch braid, otherwise known as an inside-out braid or reverse-French braid, creates a raised three-dimensional style by weaving hair under rather than over. This adds texture and structure, ideal for adding volume to your look.  Whether worn in a single braid or incorporated into a more elaborate look, you’re bound to turn heads.

How to create the look:

  • Divide hair into three sections at the crown.

  • Cross the side sections under the middle one.

  • Add more hair from each side as you move down the head.

  • Continue braiding and secure with a hair tie.

Level: Beginner

French braids are one of the most popular styles of braids - and with good reason. The style’s charm comes from its simplicity and sophistication, perfect for anything from days in the office to evening outings. Unlike the Dutch braid, this style sits flat against the head, giving a sleek and refined appearance.

How to create the look:

  • Start with three small sections at the crown.

  • Cross the outer strands over the middle.

  • Add more hair as you go.

  • Braid to the ends and secure.

3. Fishtail braid

Level: Intermediate

Known for its intricate appearance, the fish-tail braid is especially popular for special occasions like weddings. The two-strand technique gives a delicate finish that flatters straight, wavy, or curled hair. Often people embellish this look with flowers for events, such as gypsophila, to give an added edge. How to create the look:

  • Split hair into two equal sections.

  • Take a small piece from the outside of one section and cross it to the other side.

  • Repeat, alternating sides, until you reach the end.

  • Secure with a hair tie..

4. Bubble braid

Level: Beginner

Bubble braids bring a fresh, youthful twist to traditional braid styles. They are incredibly easy to do, as they don’t require any plaiting - you’ll just need a ponytail and a few hair ties. Ideal for thicker hair types, this look is usually seen at festivals and through the summer time. Get more festival inspiration: 10 Festival Hair Ideas to Stand Out in the Crowd

How to create the look:

  • Tie hair into a ponytail.

  • Place additional elastics every few inches down the length.

  • Gently tug each section to create bubbles.

5. Dragon braid

Level: Expert

If you’re looking for a bold and dynamic braid that has maximum impact, the dragon braid is as strong as its name. It’s inspired by the resemblance to a dragon’s spine, for a fierce finish. Although more difficult than simpler braids, this statement looks perfect if you want to showcase your creativity and edge.

How to create the look:

  • Section off the centre part of your hair.

  • Braid in a Dutch style, incorporating small side sections.

  • Secure at the nape and style loose or into a bun.

6. Viking braid

Level: Expert

Although it’s inspired by historic styles, the Viking braid is anything but out of date. Inspired by Norse warrior styles, Viking braids are powerful, structured, and full of attitude. Often consisting of multiple small Dutch braids or rope braids, they can be worn with shaved sides or a high ponytail for maximum impact.

How to create the look:

  • Part hair into sections.

  • Create tight Dutch braids close to the scalp.

  • Tie braids together or into a ponytail.

7. Side braids

Level: Beginner

Side braids are the ultimate in versatility. This romantic style can be dressed up or down, and flatter any hair length or texture. Whether you opt for a tight French braid or a loose fishtail, styling to one side frames the face beautifully and adds softness and sophistication to your look.

How to create the look:

  • Sweep all your hair to one side.

  • Choose your braid style (French, fishtail, etc.).

  • Braid downward and secure.

  • Loosen gently for a relaxed finish.

8. Crown braid

Level: Intermediate

Nothing says elegance like the crown braid. Wrapping around the head, this braid is ideal for formal events, weddings, or when you just want to feel like royalty. It creates the illusion of a braided crown, hence its name.

How to create the look:

  • Part hair down the centre.

  • Create two braids, one on each side.

  • Wrap each over the crown and pin.

  • Tuck ends for a seamless look.

9. Box Braids

Level: Expert

Steeped in cultural heritage, box braids are a protective style that offer both beauty and functionality. They are created in square-shaped sections and can last for weeks or more with the right care. This look is ideal for reducing daily styling while maintaining a fashion-forward look.

How to create the look:

  • Divide hair into square-shaped sections.

  • Braid each from root to tip.

  • Add extensions for extra length or volume.

10. Waterfall braid

Level: Intermediate

Delicate and whimsical, this is another braid that can be worn at an event or wedding. The half-up, half-down style lets strands of hair fall through the braid, creating a cascading effect similar to a waterfall. It’s soft, romantic, and looks gorgeous on curled or wavy hair.

How to create the look:

  • Start a French braid near your hairline.

  • After each crossover, drop the lower strand.

  • Pick up a new one from above to continue.

  • Pin at the back.

11. Halo braid

Level: Intermediate

A halo braid gives you a dreamy, ethereal look by wrapping a braid around your head. This is different to a crown braid because it’s more relaxed and softer, rather than structured and regal in appearance. This style is ideal for garden parties, weddings, or editorial styling.

How to create the look:

  • Start a Dutch braid behind one ear.

  • Braid around the head.

  • Tuck and pin the end underneath.

12. Milkmaid Braid

Level: Beginner

Sweet, traditional and incredibly charming, the milkmaid braid is here to stay. It involves creating two braids and pinning them across the crown of your head. The result? Soft, vintage-inspired locks, ideal for daytime events or a unique updo. Pair a white floral top or dress to pull everything together!

How to create the look:

  • Part hair down the middle.

  • Create two pigtail braids.

  • Cross them over the top of your head.

  • Pin in place and tuck the ends.

13. Messy braid

Level: Beginner

Looking for a laidback look that looks effortlessly cool? Messy braids are for you! This style balances structure with softness, perfect for weekend wear or casual occasions. To achieve this style, you create your braid - then mess it up by pulling on each section of your hair - resulting in a gorgeously undone style.

How to create the look:

  • Loosely braid your hair.

  • Pull sections apart slightly.

  • Tug a few face-framing strands free.

14. Mermaid braid

Level: Intermediate

Intricate and full of volume, the mermaid braid creates a flowing, fairytale effect. It incorporates small pieces woven into a central braid, resulting in a full, layered finish that mimics underwater movement. This style is incredibly versatile, and can be worn day-to-day or for occasions such as weddings.

How to create the look:

  • Start with a loose French braid.

  • Weave small outer sections over the main braid.

  • Continue down the length and secure.

15. Rope braids

Level: Beginner

Simple yet stunning, the rope braid is a two-strand twist that gives a sleek finish. It’s known for being quick and easy - the simplest of all braids to create. You twist each section in the same direction, creating a braid that resembles the twist of rope.

How to create the look:

  • Divide hair into two sections.

  • Twist each section in the same direction.

  • Cross them over in the opposite direction.

  • Secure with an elastic at the end.
