What is Squalane? Benefits, Origin and Function

Ever looked through hair and skin products and seen ‘squalane’? This incredible ingredient is renowned for its moisturising, hydrating and high-shine properties. In this blog, Laura Elliott, head of education at Neäl & Wølf explores everything you need to know about squalane, from its origins to its benefits.

What is squalane?

Squalane is an emollient, which is one of the key ingredients in moisturisers that keep hair and skin hydrated. This imitates the natural oils of your body, absorbing into your tresses quickly without leaving a greasy residue behind. Because of its nourishing properties, this property is commonly used in hair products that prioritise care and health.

What does squalane do?

Squalane’s main function is to hydrate hair and skin by locking in moisture. But it also works as an antioxidant which protects your body from harmful environmental factors, like toxins and chemicals. It also has the ability to smooth hair and prevent frizz, making your locks much more manageable. Squalane is very lightweight too, so won’t weigh your hair down and restrict volume!

What is squalane made from?

Squalane is made from plants! Most commonly, the ingredient comes from olives, rice bran or sugarcane. This makes squalane super environmentally friendly and cruelty free! At Neäl & Wølf, we’re proud to be Leaping Bunny approved by Cruelty Free International, the leading organisation working to end animal testing. Squalane vs squalene: which is which?

While they sound super similar, squalane and squalene are very different. Squalene is retrieved from the liver of sharks, which isn’t environmentally friendly at all. In comparison, squalane is a better, cruelty-free option that comes from plants. For haircare, squalane is the preferred option due to its ecofriendly and gentle properties.

What is squalane good for?

The versatility of squalane means it is great for all skin and hair types. This means that it works well with the most sensitive skin and the finest hair. It can balance the production of the hair’s natural oils, as well as speed up the absorption of other ingredients if in the same product.

How do you use squalane?

There’s a variety of ways that squalane can be integrated into your skin and hair care routine. For skin, it can be applied directly to your skin in serums, creams and moisturisers. When it comes to hair, squalane can be massaged into your locks depending on the product.

When should you use squalane?

If you have dry, damaged or frizzy hair, it’s time to use squalane! It can also be used on coloured hair, to help prevent colour fade and add a glossy, healthy-looking shine.

What are the hair benefits of squalane?

Squalane has tons of benefits when it comes to hair! It can make your locks softer, smoother and more manageable. It also forms a protective coating over your tresses, preventing moisture loss. Plus, squalane promotes good scalp health by reducing dryness and irritation - this can create the best environment for new hair growth.

Here at Neäl & Wølf, we know that high quality ingredients are key to healthy-looking hair.
