Our hair goes through a lot. From the changing seasons to the everyday styling, there’s a lot of ways your hair can take a beating. Heat damage is just one of the things we expose our hair to without realising the impact it can have. In this blog Laura Elliott, Head of Education at Neäl & Wølf shares how to protect your hair from heat damage.
Why does heat damage happen?
Heat styling tools like straighteners, curling wands and blow dryers work by altering your hair’s structure. Every strand of your hair is made up of proteins and moisture that keep it strong and smooth. Too much heat, or unprotected heat, strips away the moisture and weakens the protein bonds in your locks. This can leave your hair vulnerable to breakage, dryness and dullness.
What does heat damaged hair look like?
Heat-damaged hair usually loses its natural shine and softness, making it appear dry, rough and hard to manage. This can mean split ends and frizzy hair, which over time can lead to brittle locks. It’s important to protect your hair from the offset to avoid any dryness and damage.
How can you protect against heat damaged hair?
You may think that heat protection isn’t important if the only form of heat your hair is exposed to is the odd blow dry from your hairdryer. But, heat protection isn’t simply important for those who frequently use styling tools such as straighteners or curling irons. It’s something that we should all be including in our daily haircare routines. Read on for our top recommendations.
1. Use a heat protecting spray
Heat protection sprays behave in a similar way to sun cream, and how it protects our skin from sun damage. Heat-protection products, like our GUARD Heat Protection Spray and our MIRACLE Rapid Blow Dry Mist, actually form a physical barrier over the cuticle of your hair that repels the heat from styling tools to prevent damage. Without this barrier each strand of hair becomes more and more prone to split ends and breakages, which over time will leave your hair looking dull.
This physical barrier also helps to keep the water molecules and keratin that make up the inner cortex of each strand of hair in place. When heat is applied to hair, these water molecules evaporate and without them the texture and strength of your hair can change drastically. By applying heat-protection spray, you not only protect the outer cuticle of your hair, but you also ensure that the moisture needed to keep your hair looking shiny and strong stays in place.

2. Keep hair hydrated
Brittle strands are far more prone to breakage, making hydration key to maintaining strong, resilient hair. Incorporate moisture-rich products into your washing routine such as those in our HYDRATE Range for intense hydration, ahead of heat styling.
Choose our HYDRATE Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner when in the shower for a nourishing cleanse, followed by our HYDRATE Moisture Hair Mask for an instant frizz-free shine. Finish with our HYDRATE Leave-In Conditioning Spray, which, as well as detangling and reducing frizz, also includes built-in heat protection. These formulations work to replenish lost hydration, leaving hair soft, supple, and beautifully conditioned.

3. Limit heat exposure where possible
We’re not going to tell you to stop using heat styling tools as we understand that these can be a key part of your routine - especially in winter or when you’re in a hurry, when air drying isn’t an option. Instead, look for intelligent tools and solutions that are designed to minimise heat damage.
Our HERØ Ionic Technology Hair Dryer uses advanced ionic technology to dry hair more quickly and efficiently, reducing the time your hair is exposed to heat. Similarly, our MIRACLE Rapid Blow-Dry Mist can help to reduce drying time by up to 50%. Using both of these together is a winning combination for heat damage prevention.
4. Only use heat on dry hair
One of the most important rules: never apply heat to wet hair. Hair is at its most fragile when damp, and using straighteners or curling tools at this stage can cause severe damage to the cuticle. Always ensure your hair is completely dry before using heated styling tools to maintain strength and prevent breakage.
5. Distribute heat
Concentrating heat in one area for too long can lead to unnecessary stress on the hair. When blow-drying, keep the airflow moving and avoid lingering on a single section. Our HERØ Ionic Technology Hair Dryer’s diffuser attachment helps distribute heat more evenly, enhancing natural texture while reducing direct heat exposure.

When should you use heat protection?
The best time to apply heat protection sprays to your hair is when your hair is wet or damp, before any heated styling tools have been used. For the best results, we recommend applying to your hair in sections and combing through to ensure your hair is evenly coated. This ensures every strand is protected, creating the perfect foundation for safe, effective styling.
