New Year is all about new beginnings, so what better time than to leave limp locks in the past and embrace the new year with a haircare routine to revitalise those tired tresses! Make your New Year’s resolution to slay in 2019 with stronger and more beautiful hair! To kick you off, we have listed our top tips for keeping your hair lushes for longer.
You’ve been brushing your hair wrong your whole life
It’s a common mistake to brush your hair from its roots down to its tips, but by doing so, any knots that you do have you are tightening. As a result, along with damaging your hair follicles, your hair can become more brittle and sensitive to certain styling techniques. To avoid this, it is recommended that you brush your hair in sections from bottom to top, ensuring that knots are removed gently from their origin.
Don’t sleep with wet hair
We are all guilty of it! Sometimes getting out the shower with fresh, clean hair, and laying your head down on a soft pillow is all you can dream of at the end of a hectic day. However, many of us don’t realise that whilst your hair may feel sumptuously soft, in fact, when your hair is wet it is in its most fragile state. The friction between your hair and the surface of the pillow can lead to dehydrated hair, resulting in fizziness and breakages. Our pre-bed hack is to apply VELVET to your hair after you have showered to help your hair retain its natural oils. This will also make your hair prepared for heat styling in the morning! However, if you don’t fancy giving up going to bed with wet hair, you could go as far as swapping your cotton pillows for silk pillows. Not only are silk pillows more hygienic, but they are also gentler on your hair too.
Break your high bun habit
We all love a good high bun; flattering, beautiful, quick and easy. Whether we’re leaving for the gym or heading out to be wined and dined, we’re all guilty of being advocates of the dynamic high bun. However, 2019 may be the year of half-up buns or letting your hair flow wild and free. Adorning a high bun too regularly can cause strain on your roots, particularly on the underlayer of your hair. The strain can damage hair follicles, leading to breakages. Despite their beauty, high buns can be a bad habit to get into – 2019 could be the year to ditch the bun!
Swap your cotton towel
Traditional towels are very harsh on your hair, particularly if you already have rather fragile hair. Aggressively drying your hair with a cotton towel can cause it to break due to the towel stripping the hair of its natural oils. Avoid brittle hair and split ends by drying your hair with a microfibre towel. This material does not only dry your hair quicker, but it imposes less friction and doesn’t extract as much moisture from your hair as a traditional cotton towel would.
Say no to dry shampoo
Dry shampoo is a magical thing. It’s convenient, adds volume and texture, and it smells amazing! However, dry shampoo contains starches and heavy powders, which over time dehydrates not only your hair but your scalp too. Overdoing it on the dry shampoo can also clog your hair follicles, which can lead to thinning, dull and lifeless hair. If absolutely necessary, we would recommend only using dry shampoo once a week. To combat the risk of overly drying out your mane, HARMONY contains a unique combination of intensive conditioners to deliver healthier feeling and looking hair.
