Short hair is taking centre stage right now. From the perennial pixie cut to the iconic bob to the modern lob, there is plenty of inspiration and choice for those of us who want to go shorter this year.

When you’re looking for a new style, the best approach is to check out Instagram, online glamour mags, and the catwalks for a look that appeals, and then make it uniquely ‘you’. That’s what we did, and here’s what we found during the search.

No one rocks a blunt fringe and super-short bob like Taylor Swift. Word is that her new look has inspired inches to fall and fringes to appear across the nation. We also loved Sienna Miller’s blonde bob, which was short enough to style easily but had enough length to create sexy waves.

Lucy Hale also went for surfer chick waves, but added a simple centre parting that was both cute and stylish. Rachel McAdams rocked her short bob with a side part. Another queen of the side part is Jennifer Lawrence, whose choppy platinum bob is one of our favourite hairstyles this year.

If you’re a little nervous about going shorter, we get it, and we recommend longer lobs, like the lush and full version being worn by Lily James. Jennifer Lopez’s shoulder-grazing style proves that the lob is positively hot when worn smooth and straight. Anne Hathaway’s style demonstrates the sheer amount of volume you can get when you go mid-length.

Going super-short doesn’t mean your styling options are limited. A pixie cut combined with some length at the top is a fun way to master the trend. You can also take Kate Mara’s lead and add a stunning light fringe, or try Miranda Kerr’s trick of adding differing lengths on both sides to create a graduated style. You can even go vintage like Karlie Kloss, whose bob is sheer 1920s flapper girl.

Before you ask: yes, you can go edgy and rainbow with short hair. Just look at Natalie Portman: we love the ombre touch to her pretty lob.
