The catwalk and red carpets are the place we look to find out what the next big trend is going to be in fashion, hair and make-up for women.

And it looks like 2016 sees a return of the side-parting. This year partings are no longer straight through the middle. The severe side-parting is back in and the centre parting is out. The great thing about this look is its versatility. Whether you have long or short hair, worn the right way, a side parting can make you look years younger and can add volume to any hair type.

With the side-parting it’s all about how best to wear it.

At the Burberry spring/summer 2016 menswear show, Suki Waterhouse’s side-parting worked perfectly with her wavy locks. So for those of you with tumbling long hair, whether straight or with a slight wave, why not add a deep side parting so that your hair falls over one shoulder, creating a sophisticated look that’s perfect for both day or night.

At this years Golden Globes, Sophia Bush combined a wet look side-parting with a classy updo. To recreate the look is easy. All you have to do is choose the side where you want the parting to sit. For a more casual parting use your fingers and to achieve a more severe and defined parting use a small toothed comb. Part your hair from the edge of your face, taking the parting as far back to the centre of the crown of your head as you dare, then simply tie it up at the back into a pony tail or low bun.

Those of you with shorter page-boy cuts or bobbed hair can try dramatic comb overs that will add instant volume. Side-partings can also flatter your face shape. If you have a rounder shaped face then simply let the side with most hair fall across your face.

On the red carpet Taylor Swift rocked a sexy, deeply side-parted down do and showed us that the trendy side-parting adds glamour to any down do.

But the versatility of this style doesn’t end there. For those of you who want the best of both worlds, the side-parting also looks super stylish as the basis of a half-up, half-down do. Copy the likes of style icons such as Kirsten Dunst and keep the look smart by clipping the hair from your parting up to one side. Or to keep it casual you can just side-part and pin the top section of your hair up and leave the bottom half down so that it hangs naturally and effortlessly onto your shoulders.
